Pregnancy massage: what to expect at your first visit

Comfort, clear communication and a supported position matter more than following a standard full-body routine.

Check suitability before choosing a date

Our pregnancy massage is offered from 13 weeks in an uncomplicated pregnancy. Tell us how many weeks pregnant you are and discuss relevant health information before the session. This is the treatment room policy, not a general assurance that massage is suitable for every pregnancy.

If you have a complication, new symptoms or advice from your maternity team about activity or treatment, speak to them and contact us before booking. We may need to adapt or postpone an appointment.

Expect a supported position

You will normally be supported in a side-lying position with pillows to help you settle comfortably. Unscented oil is used. Your therapist can discuss areas you would like to focus on, such as familiar shoulder or lower-back tension, and change the position if needed.

Tell them if you feel too warm, uncomfortable, dizzy or simply need a pause. You can ask for a lighter touch or avoid an area. A pregnancy appointment should make room for your changing comfort throughout the session.

Choosing between 60 and 90 minutes

A 60-minute treatment costs £83; 90 minutes costs £113. Choose the time you feel comfortable setting aside, rather than assuming longer is always preferable. If lying in one position is difficult, discuss that with us first.

Wear something comfortable for the journey and allow time to reach our second-floor rooms. Please call before booking if stairs are a concern.

Aches that need different advice

Massage can be a way to take time for comfort and relaxation. It does not assess the cause of new pain or replace antenatal care. The NHS advice on back pain in pregnancy explains when to contact your midwife or GP. Back pain with bleeding, fever, pain when passing urine or pain under the ribs needs prompt advice.

If you are worried about symptoms, contact your maternity team rather than waiting for a massage appointment.

Buying a pregnancy massage as a gift

A gift voucher gives the recipient time to choose a date and discuss suitability themselves. Vouchers last six months from issue, so consider their due date and preferences before buying. Contact us if you would like help choosing.
