Talk about the particular discomfort
An aching back, a feeling of tightness and a new sharp pain are different experiences. Tell your maternity team about pain that is new, worrying or affecting how you move. A pregnancy massage is a relaxation appointment with adaptations for comfort; it is not a way to diagnose the cause of pelvic, back or leg pain.
How the appointment is adapted
Our pregnancy treatment uses side-lying positioning, supportive pillows and a predominantly relaxing approach. Explain the areas you would like to focus on and positions that do not feel comfortable. Your therapist can discuss adjustments, and you can ask to pause or move at any point. There is no reason to remain in a position simply because the session has started.
Suitability before booking
The Treatment Rooms offers pregnancy massage from 13 weeks for an uncomplicated pregnancy, subject to an individual discussion. Tell us about complications and advice from your midwife or GP. If you are buying a gift, a monetary voucher allows the recipient to speak to us and choose the appointment themselves rather than being committed to a particular treatment.
Advice from your maternity team
The NHS page on back pain in pregnancy explains when to seek help. New or worsening pain accompanied by other symptoms needs medical advice. Do not assume swelling or pain in one leg is a routine pregnancy ache suitable for massage.
