Your first massage: what to expect

A few practical details can make your first visit feel much easier, from choosing a treatment to settling on the couch.

Before you arrive

Choose a treatment by what you want from the visit: time to unwind, focused muscle work or a shorter appointment for one area. Our Henley massage guide compares the options. If you are uncertain about suitability, contact us before booking rather than putting detailed health information in a general enquiry.

Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to change out of and back into. There is no need for special sports kit for a general massage. Allow time to find Bank Chambers at 10 Hart Street and come up to the second floor by stairs.

The conversation comes first

Tell your therapist about relevant health conditions, medication, recent operations or injuries, pregnancy and any areas you would prefer not to have touched. Mention allergies and sensitivities to oils or fragrances. They will discuss what is appropriate for the appointment.

You can describe what you hope to get from the session in ordinary words. “My shoulders feel tight after desk work” or “I would like a gentle, quiet treatment” is a useful starting point.

Your therapist explains what clothing is appropriate for the treatment you have chosen and gives you privacy to prepare. You remain appropriately covered, with only the area being worked on uncovered as needed. Ask if you are unsure about any part of this.

You can decline an area, request a change in pressure or stop a treatment. Consent is ongoing. You do not need to put up with discomfort or keep talking if you would prefer quiet.

During and after your appointment

Let your therapist know if the pressure or position is uncomfortable. Sharp pain, numbness, dizziness or feeling unwell should be mentioned straight away. At the end, take a moment before getting up and ask any questions about the session.

Your response can vary: you may feel relaxed, notice temporary tenderness or simply enjoy having set aside the time. Severe or worsening symptoms are not something to dismiss as a normal part of massage.

Make the practical details simple

Book online for one person, or contact us for two treatments at the same time. The booking confirmation includes appointment information and a link for changes. If someone has given you a voucher, enter its code at the final booking step.
